Frances Hansen’s lovely cookbook
1/2 scrapbook, 1/2 recipe file:

Some of my favorite cookbooks are exactly like this: packed with personal tidbits and recipes that date back generations. Frances’s book is collage poem to her family, but dedicated to her readers.

She writes: “I dedicate this book to all those countless home cooks whom continually put a meal on the table with flair, grace & often with an inventiveness that is called for when trying to figure out what to make for dinner.”

I guess that would be me. (Minus the grace & flair part.) I never know what to cook.

Frances HansenĀ is a regular exhibitor in Australia and New Zealand, works at the Manukau School of Visual Arts, and teaches painting and drawing. You can find Keepsakes: Recipes, Mementos, Miscellany on Amazon.

Ok, I’m off to see what’s in the cupboard…

I agree, it makes me want to scribble in more books, to leave for my kids.

I love this! Just yesterday, I decided to use a beautiful, orange journal Mr B gave me in a similar way. I’m only just learning to cook, so I thought I’d put down the recipes I’ve found and adapted that really work, and past in some pictures, ephemera, and maybe add some little paintings. Now I am going to bookmark your post so I can use it for inspiration.

That is a seriously beautiful cookbook! The calligraphy-like recipe cards, the colors, the photograph–it all looks like it’d be as fun to read as it would be useful in the kitchen.

I brought this cookbook three months ago and since then everyone I know has popped round asking to borrow it. It is just gorgeous. The cheesecake recipe in it is foolproof and sublime!
Your blog is looking great by the way

Love this! I did a family cookbook a couple of years ago and now I’m wishing I would have done something more like this. Maybe I’ll collect all of the copies back up and make updates to them for Christmas this year!

  7. Appreciate for the magnificent web blog info. Love your updates. Will pop back All the best.
